Hello! I’m Amy Newell, and I’m a candidate for Library Trustee.

Did you know that the Brookline Public Library is overseen by a 12-member elected Board of Trustees? The Board of Trustees supervises the library director and works with the Town, the Friends of the Public Library, and the Brookline Library Foundation to ensure that we have an amazing library system.

I’m running for Library Trustee because I believe that libraries are critical democratic infrastructure and we must support and defend them with everything we have.

I’ve lived in Brookline’s precinct 7 since 1998. Both my children went to Pierce and BHS. I’ve had a Brookline library card since forever and I have been a town meeting member since 2023. I spent 25 years as a software engineer, first slinging code and then in leadership roles, and I am eager to bring my perspective on tech and people to bear on issues facing our libraries.

The election is May 5th! You can check your voter registration, find your precinct, and find a whole bunch of other election information here.

“Part of why I am insistent that public libraries must be expanded is because they can offer us a foundation for unleashing creativity and for nurturing imagination. This is an affirmative project at a time when we desperately need to be FOR things and not just against them.”
